Cape Girardeau sits in the southeast corner of Missouri, along the Mississippi River and the first town as you cross the Bill Emerson Memorial Bridge from Illinois. Located in two counties – Cape Girardeau County and Scott County, the city of Cape Girardeau has a population of 40,377. It is located on I-55 which runs from Chicago, St. Louis, to Memphis and New Orleans.
Banterra’s Cape Girardeau branch is located in the three-story Banterra Centre, located at 1650 N. Kingshighway, near the Mt. Auburn intersection and just 12 minutes from Jackson, Missouri. Banterra Centre is a $7-million facility developed by Banterra and The Rhodes Group and opened in 2013. Plaza Tire is north of Banterra Centre and nearby Ford Groves Ford Lincoln car dealership; Banterra Center is south of Ace Hardware, McDonald’s and Scooter’s Coffee.
The city’s 200-year history is tied to its position on the river. In the 1700s, French trader, Jean Girardot established the area as a trading post along the Mississippi in the proximity of more than 20 Native American tribes, offering a place to exchange furs and other goods. In 1793, the city was officially founded as a military post and served as a gateway for Lewis and Clark’s journey west. Also, near the river, is the Civil War-era Ford D where Lieutenant John Wesley Powell directed a Union regiment before later venturing west where he explored the Grand Canyon.
Cape Girardeau is home to Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO) and the SEMO Redhawks. Founded in 1893, SEMO offers 170 degree programs to more than 10,000 students. The university has five Missouri locations including its main campus in Cape Girardeau.
“Cape”, as the city is called locally, is an important hub for education and industry, but also offers plenty of fun things to do. Visitors can enjoy an educational conservation nature center, a safari park where exotic animals are showcased or the Cape Splash Aquatic Center which is located directly across from Banterra Centre. SEMO’s Show Me Center offers Redhawks basketball as well as concerts and events. Cape Girardeau also has a revitalized downtown area with plenty of restaurants and shops, as well as The Isle Casino. FLY-CGI is Cape’s regional, full-service airport, offering flights to Nashville, Tennessee and Tupelo, Mississippi via Contour Airlines as well as charter flights.
Banterra is a proud sponsor of SEMO and the SEMO Redhawks, Cape Girardeau Public Schools and the Cape Girardeau Tigers, as well as Cape Catfish, the Prospect League baseball team.
