Banterra established a branch in Elizabethtown in 2014. It is located at 101 S. Main St., a one-minute walk to the Ohio River and the same distance to the Rose Hotel-McFarland Tavern Historic Site and the popular E-Town River Restaurant which is located in the river. Banterra’s branch is located in a historic building, original date unknown, but First State Bank was located in this building from 1939 to 1989.
Because the Ohio River served a main artery for transportation, Elizabethtown and the county served as a passageway to Illinois in the 1700s and 1800s. One of Elizabethtown’s earliest settlers was James McFarland. He arrived in 1809 and the village was founded around his tavern built in 1812. This tavern later became the Rose Hotel, which is now a state historic site and offers rooms on AirBnB. The town is named after James’ wife, Elizabeth.
In 2022, the Hardin County Independent in Elizabethtown was awarded the first Landmarks Illinois Banterra Bank Preserve Southern Illinois Grant. The newspaper was founded in 1870 and has operated in its current historic building since 1925.
Hardin County Community Unit School District #1 is located in Elizabethtown, is home to the Hardin County Cougars and has grades K-12.
