Banterra established a branch in Metropolis in 2000.  A new branch was built in 2015, and former branch building donated to Massac County for courthouse needs at an estimated value of $3.5 million.  Banterra’s Metropolis branch is located at 521 Ferry St, in the heart of downtown area and just a few blocks from the Ohio River.  You can find the 12 ft. Superman statue and The Super Museum nearby as well as the popular restaurant - Fat Edd’s Roadhouse.

Metropolis has a rich history given the river’s offering of trading routes, with various cultures of Native Americans previously populating the area for thousands of years.  In 1757, Massac County was settled by a French expedition and Fort de L’Ascension was built for the French and Indian War.  The fort was destroyed, but later rebuilt in 1794 after President George Washington ordered to do so.  The fort was severely damaged by the 1811-12 New Mandrid earthquakes, abandoned by U.S. military and what was left was scavenged by local settlers.

In 1839, the city of Metropolis was founded near the site of Fort Massac from a merchant from Pittsburgh and a local land owner.  They knew the Ohio River would allow the location to be a transport hub and they chose a grand name for the city.  In 1843, Illinois Legislature formed Massac County.

Agricultural historically and continues to be an economic driver for the city, however with the riverboat casino of Harrah’s Casino & Hotel, as well as downtown revitalization and festivals, tourism is one of the city’s largest industries.

Massac Unit #1 School District includes Brookport, Franklin, Jefferson, Metropolis and Unity Elementary Schools, Massac Junior High School and Massac County High School.  Banterra proudly supports these schools, youth sports and community event such as Metropolis Superman Celebration, Massac County Housing Authority Annual Block Party and Massac County Chamber of Commerce Cosmic Bowl.
